Heartland
Music in the Regions in partnership with Arts Mildura present Heartland.
The great didgeridoo virtuoso William Barton and powerhouse violinist Véronique Serret blend songlines and storytelling in this compelling collaborative work. Inspired by the poetry of William’s mother, Aunty Delmae Barton, the message of Heartland is of peace and love carried by an eagle spirit.
Barton and Serret welcome listeners into a unique soundscape, drawing on the power of connection to place. Violins, didgeridoo and guitar are joined by soaring vocals, ethereal loops and electronic effects in a distinct evocation of the Australian landscape. From its roots as a seven-minute commission for the 2019 Canberra International Music Festival, this extraordinary work has grown into an hour-long reimagined “chamber oratorio” exploration of Country, landscape, culture, language and identity.
About the Artists
For two decades, William Barton has forged a peerless profile as a performer and composer in the classical musical world, from the Philharmonic Orchestras of London and Berlin to historic events at Westminster Abbey for Commonwealth Day 2019, Anzac Cove and the Beijing Olympics. His awards include Winner of Best Original Score for a Mainstage Production at the 2018 Sydney Theatre Awards and Winner of Best Classical Album with ARIA for Birdsong At Dusk in 2012. With his prodigious musicality and the quiet conviction of his Kalkadunga heritage, he has vastly expanded the horizons of the didgeridoo — and the culture and landscape that it represents.
Véronique Serret is a violinist, vocalist and composer effortlessly bridging the divide between classical and contemporary art forms. In demand as a leader, chamber musician, mentor and collaborative artist, Véronique is known for her inclusive sound-world her musical flexibility and willingness to collaborate across genres, as well as her work on the 6 string electric violin. Over many decades Véronique has been fortunate to work extensively with Bangarra Dance Theatre, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Dance Company and as concertmaster of the Darwin Symphony.

Collective Movements: First Nations Collectives, Collaborations and Creative Practices from across Victoria is a wide-ranging project focusing on the work of historic and contemporary First Nations creative practitioners and community groups from across Victoria that recognises collectivity as integral to Indigenous knowledges and ways of being. An exhibition, publishing project, conversation and workshop platform, the project begins with the desire to make more visible a language and terminology beyond Western art concepts of ‘collaboration’ and ‘collectivism’–one that better describes and acknowledges the way Indigenous creatives work within a broader community and its inheritances.
Collective Movements will feature new artwork commissions alongside existing works, archives and participation from a range of contributors, including Ensemble Dutala, ILBIJERRI Theatre Company, Kaiela Arts, Koorroyarr, Latje Latje Dance Group Mildura, Pitcha Makin Fellas, the Possum Skin Cloak Story (founded by Vicki Couzens, Debra Couzens [1962–2021], Lee Darroch and Treahna Hamm), The Torch, this mob and a look back at We Iri, We Homeborn – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Festival (1996–99).
Collective Movements is a MUMA / NETS Victoria touring exhibition., curated by Taungurung artist and curator Kate ten Buuren; Lardil and Yangkaal artist and curator Maya Hodge; and N'Arweet Professor Carolyn Briggs AM PhD; with support from Bundjalung, Muruwari and Kamilaroi artist and senior academic, Professor Brian Martin, Director of the Wominjeka Djeembana Indigenous Research Lab, Monash University.

Memories and Elephants: The art of casual racism is a thought-provoking collection of memoir-based essays that delves into the sociopolitical landscape of Australian society. Written by Meaghan Katrak Harris, these essays offer a unique exploration of the intersectionality of Australian culture, classism, racism, and identity.
Through her powerful personal narrative, Meaghan draws on her experiences as a teenage mother, a member of a large multicultural family, a social worker, and an academic. With clarity and compassion, she sheds light on the often uncomfortable aspects of our society - the elephants in the room that have been historically downplayed and ignored.
From memories of country life to the bustling city, from the streets to national television, Memories and Elephants invites readers to challenge the dominant narrative of Australian identity. It encourages us to think critically about the complexities of our multicultural society and the impact of casual racism.

Art Forum | Ian Bow: an Australian artist reforming postwar adult education through art
Wednesday 29 November
5.00pm for 5.10pm start
Abstract: Interdisciplinary readings of the phenomenon of modernism in Australia perceive of its multifarious nature. Within this frame, the influence of émigré artists, like Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack, in shaping a modern pedagogical system of art education is a topic of current scholarship. Certainly, in projects such as Bauhaus Diaspora and Beyond: Transforming Education Through Art, Design and Architecture, Goad, McNamara and Stephen assert that ‘émigré’s had profound and diverse effects on postwar education’ (2019: 1). But what of the influence of Australian-born artist-educators? To address that question, this paper will bring to light the activities of Melbourne-born and based artist-educator Ian Bow (1914-1989) who was on the frontline of mid-century educational reform. Like his associate Hirschfeld-Mack, Bow participated in the 1954 Melbourne UNESCO seminar on art in education, and he established and directed the arts curriculum at one of Melbourne’s independent schools. However, it is Bow’s work in adult education 1944-1969 that he exerted greatest influence and where I contend that Bow’s Practical Painting classes were fundamental in modernist strategies to foster education through art and to embed art in the social fabric of Victoria, including Mildura.
Bio: Heather Lee is a PhD Candidate in Art History with the University of Adelaide. Her thesis researches the Melbourne-based modernist painter/sculptor/educator Ian Graham Bow (1914-1989). Bow’s contribution to the discipline is articulated through his archive and his many artworks held in collections nation-wide however, in the early 1970s Bow’s career as an artist and educator ended and his voice has remained muted since. Couched as a contextual biography with accompanying catalogue raisonné, Lee’s thesis argues that Bow was among those art professionals at the forefront of contributing to socio-cultural change in Victoria and shaping a socially modern state.
